Colman Domingo talks absence of black trauma in ‘Candyman,’ reveals Marvel movie aspirations - Yahoo News

“I got tired of seeing it [Black bodies brutalized],” the actor explained.

Oscar winner Jordan Peele is giving audiences a fresh new take on a cult classic urban legend: Candyman.

Critically acclaimed filmmaker Nia DaCosta directs this contemporary reimagining of Candyman, which returns to the now-gentrified Chicago neighborhood where the legend began, and the original film from 1992 took place.

The storyline is timely, and the film is sure to give movie audiences that particular woke horror fix that’s become synonymous with a Peele flick.

Set a decade after the last of the Cabrini towers were torn down, Anthony (Yahya-Abdul Mateen II) and his girlfriend, Brianna, (Teyonah Parris) move into a fabulous loft in the now-gentrified Cabrini. A chance encounter with a longtime neighborhood resident (Colman Domingo) exposes Anthony to the true story behind Candyman. Anthony’s intrigue in the urban legend opens a door to a past that unravels his own sanity and unleashes a terrible wave of violence.

In an interview with theGrio, Domingo opened up about how he recently became “exhausted” by movies and TV shows that focus on Black trauma, and expressed appreciation in the fact that viewers will never see a Black body being brutalized in Candyman.

“I started to examine the things that I’m so concerned with in my personal life. I got tired of seeing it [Black bodies brutalized]. I thought it was a narrative that kept perpetuating the things that I was seeing on the news channels and on cell phones, you name it,” Domingo said. “I need love and joy as well. I need a new way to examine this stuff.”

The Fear the Walking Dead star added that DaCosta’s Candyman won’t be so horrific that audiences will be compelled to look away from what they’re watching on-screen.

“I love that Nia DaCosta uses puppetry. It has more size, and I think there is a bit more of a remove and you can actually experience it — even analytically as well,” he said. “So it’s not just emotional. Like, you know… you have to look away. It’s like, ‘no, you have to look towards it now, because it’s even more epic and mythic.’ It’s a true examination of the reality of it. I think something about that is really special.”

DaCosta made history last year when it was announced that she would be the first Black woman to direct a Marvel film with the Captain Marvel sequel, The Marvels, slated for release Nov. 11, 2022.

Domingo, who’s worn many hats as an actor and tackled nearly every genre, revealed he’s anxious for a chance to star in a Marvel movie.

“My phone rings. It just doesn’t ring from the Marvel Universe,” Domingo joked. “I’m waiting. I’m ready. I mean, I’ve worked out, and I’m fit. I can play anything. So they just have to give me a call.”

The Zola star added that he’d love to play a villain if given the chance.

“I love playing villains. They’re even more complex to me, and I think that can find what makes a villain tick and what their emotional, psychological trauma is. I love to do deep dives and do all this character work. I feel like I’d live as a villain in the Marvel Universe. So I’m waiting for my phone to ring.”

Candyman is now playing in theaters nationwide.

Kim Kardashian trolled for listening to Kanye West’s ‘Donda’ on mute - Page Six

Kim Kardashian was busted for listening to estranged husband Kanye West’s new album, “Donda,” on mute on Sunday.

The KKW Beauty founder, 40, posted screengrabs of the album playing on her iPhone — specifically “Hurricane,” “Donda,” “Lord I Need You” and “Ok Ok, Pt. 2” — with the volume turned all the way down. Fans of course, quickly noticed this detail and immediately began calling her out on social media.

“kim really said kanye’s music sounds [so much] better when it’s on mute,” one fan wrote on Twitter.

“kim kardashian posting screenshots of her listening to kanye’s new album on MUTE is taking me out,” another joked.

Kardashian has since deleted the muted grabs and reuploaded new ones with the volume turned up.

But the damage was already done. Internet trolls seized the opportunity to roast Kimye, with one suggesting, “That’s what Kanye did during the course of their marriage: listen to Kim on mute.”

“Yes Kim, that’s exactly how Kanye’s songs should be heard, on mute,” someone else tweeted.

Kardashian’s muting snafu comes two days after she shocked fans by appearing in a wedding gown at West’s listening event on Friday in Chicago.

The couple appeared to “remarry” as Ye’s “No Child Left Behind” played in the background. Not only did the stunt spark reconciliation rumors, but the estranged pair were later seen holding hands while leaving the venue.

West is even telling his music industry friends that he and Kim are back together, a source told Page Six exclusively on Sunday.

However, the source said that “everybody knows that isn’t true” and alleged West is “putting on a big show” so he can beat Drake in record sales.

R. Kelly trial: Man accuses singer of sexually assaulting him at 17 - Insider

  • A man testified Monday in R. Kelly's trial that the singer sexually assaulted him when he was 17.
  • He said Kelly invited him over to a music studio, but instead brought him to his home and performed oral sex.
  • Kelly sexually assaulted the man on numerous subsequent occasions, he testified.

The first man to publicly accuse R. Kelly of sexual misconduct testified Monday at the singer's federal sex crimes trial, saying Kelly sexually assaulted him repeatedly while he was a 17-year-old high school student.

Testifying under the pseudonym "Louis," the man said he met Kelly in 2006 while working the overnight shift at a McDonald's drive-thru in suburban Chicago.

Kelly, who was 39 years old at the time, asked for the phone number of Louis' female manager, and gave a slip of paper with his own phone number to Louis to thank him.

Louis, an aspiring R&B musician himself, texted Kelly — whose real name is Robert Sylvester Kelly — and was ultimately invited to one of the singer's music studios to play some music he had worked on.

But Louis didn't get very far.

"He let the song play for only five seconds and he said he didn't like it," Louis said.

Louis left the studio discouraged that "the king of R&B" wasn't interested in his music. But he continued to text Kelly and later saw him at a gym around the corner from the McDonald's where he worked in Markham, Illinois. Soon enough, he was regularly invited to Kelly's home for parties and to play basketball with the singer on a regular basis.

'We're brothers now'

Kelly ultimately invited Louis to a studio at his home in Olympia Fields, another suburb of Chicago. But when Louis got there, they met in a detached garage where Kelly had exercise equipment and a boxing ring, rather than in one of the studios the singer maintained in the main building.

"He asked me what I was willing to do for music," Louis said on the stand.

Louis rattled off ways he would assist Kelly, like carrying his bags. But Kelly appeared unreceptive.

"He asked me if I had any fantasies," Louis said, then quoted Kelly: "'You never had fantasies about men?'"

"I said no," Louis continued. "And then he crawled down on his knees and proceeded to give me oral sex. He zipped my pants down and he started doing it."

Federal prosecutors in Brooklyn have accused Kelly of numerous sex crimes, saying he directed people to produce women for sex, and then abused them. Kelly has pleaded not guilty to all of the charges against him.

The indictments identify two men who prosecutors say Kelly abused, in addition to over a dozen women. Four of those women have already testified in Kelly's trial so far, and all of them said they too had aspirations in the entertainment industry when they met Kelly.

On that first occasion Kelly performed oral sex, Louis testified that he told the singer to stop. After Kelly stepped back, he swore Louis to secrecy.

"Don't tell anyone," Kelly said, according to Louis. "We're brothers now."

Louis said he continued to see Kelly, still aspiring for his mentorship for a music career. He said Kelly sexually abused him on subsequent occasions, recording those encounters on an iPad and camcorders and asking that he call him "daddy."

Other women who previously testified in Kelly's trial also said Kelly recorded their sexual encounters and demanded they call him "daddy."

Louis said that after additional encounters, Kelly's attitude toward him changed.

"As our relationship got stronger, he said I was like a brother," Louis said. "I was his 'little brother.'"

‘Cobra Kai’: Ed Asner Remembered By Series Creators And Cast - Deadline

The cast and creators of Netflix’s Cobra Kai paid tribute to the legendary actor Ed Asner, who died peacefully on Aug. 29 at the age of 91.

Asner played the role of Johnny Lawrence’s (William Zabka) stepfather Sid Weinberg in three episodes (twice in season 1 and once in season 3). Season 4, which premieres in December, will likely pay tribute to Asner in some way.

“What performer could more perfectly embody the love/hate nature of playing Johnny Lawrence’s father than Ed Asner? When we dreamed up the character, there was no discussion – it was only Ed,” series creators Josh Heald, Jon Hurwitz, and Hayden Schlossberg tell Deadline in a statement.

“Whenever he was on set, it was a nonstop parade of belly laughs as we all sat at the feet of a giant,” they continued. “Getting to briefly play in his orbit while he made our karate universe ever brighter and funnier was a great honor of our careers. We will miss him dearly and we send all our love to his family.”

Zabka also mourned the loss of Asner on Sunday.

“Devastated to hear this news. What a legend,” Zabka shared via Twitter. “What a beautiful human and special friend. I learned so much from him. My love and deepest condolences to the Asner family #RIP Dear Ed @TheOnlyEdAsner”

The original Karate Kid Ralph Macchio also lamented the loss of his co-star.

“So saddened by this news. A legend and icon in the acting world,” Macchio shared via Twitter. “Endless respect for his body of work on so many levels. Ed had graced the Cobra Kai series and am grateful to have had a moment or two to meet and connect with him. An absolute privilege. #RIPEdAsner”

Netflix revealed last week Cobra Kai had been renewed for season 5 four months before the new season premieres. Production is scheduled to begin in the fall.

Kanye West's 'Donda' Album: All the Lyrics That Are Seemingly About Kim Kardashian - Entertainment Tonight

Ron Bushy, Iron Butterfly Drummer, Dead at 79 - Ultimate Classic Rock

Ron Bushy, the longtime drummer for Iron Butterfly, has died at the age of 79.

A message posted to the band’s Facebook page noted that the rocker “passed away peacefully, with his wife Nancy by his side.” TMZ reports that the musician had been battling cancer.

Born in Washington, D.C. in 1941, Bushy didn’t pick up the drums until he was in college in San Diego. “I studied biology and psychology. I was going to become a Marine Biologist and go to Scripps Institute of Oceanography in La Jolla,” the rocker recalled during a 2021 interview with Vinyl Writer Music. “I got side tracked into music part time. I rented a drum set and learned to play drums to Booker T. & the MG’s, ‘Green Onions.’”

In 1966, Bushy joined Iron Butterfly. The Los Angeles based group was part of the community of classic rock acts that emerged from the Laurel Canyon music scene at the time.

“We were a community of musicians and friends,” Bushy recalled. “We all lived in the same house in Laurel Canyon and everyone hung out together. Us and all the other guys, like the Doors, Buffalo Springfield and many more greats from this time period.”

Iron Butterfly would go on to release six studio albums from 1968 to 1975, with Bushy as the only band member to appear on every release.

The group became known for their distinctive blend of psychedelic and hard rock sounds. Iron Butterfly’s commercial peak came in 1968 with the release of their sophomore album, In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida. The LP’s title track became a breakthrough hit, rocketing the band to stardom. Bushy was an important presence on the song -- which ran a daunting 17-minutes in length -- contributing a long and legendary drum solo within the piece.

In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida sold more than 8 million copies worldwide within its first year of release, becoming the best-selling record in the history of recorded music at that time. It eventually sold more than 30 million copies worldwide, including going four-times platinum in the U.S.

Iron Butterfly initially broke up in 1971 following the release of their fourth album, Metamorphosis. When the band reformed in 1974, only Bushy remained from the previous lineup (though guitarist Erik Brann, who had been in the group from ‘67-’69, also returned.) Iron Butterfly put out two LPs in 1975, Scorching Beauty and Sun and Steel, the latter being their final studio release.

Though not recording new albums, the band continued off-and-on touring for multiple decades. Bushy was a dependable presence in the group, consistently manning the drums at the band’s live shows. Health concerns finally forced Bushy to retire from the road in the mid-2010s, but the drummer still occasionally made guest appearances with his former group.
